A mistyped code can split your royalties or duplicate your release. Check both before you deliver.
The ISRC identifies one recording - it follows that recording forever, across every store, playlist and royalty statement. The UPC identifies the release (single, EP or album) as a product.
Your distributor usually assigns both for free. If you bring your own, never reuse an ISRC for a different recording, and never let one recording end up with two ISRCs - that splits its streams and royalties.
The validator checks ISRC format (2-letter country, 3-character registrant, 2-digit year, 5-digit designation) and verifies the UPC's check digit, catching typos before they reach a store.
